Scholarship Fund in Memory Of Robert Steiner

Because of you, we thrive.

Professor Robert (Bob) Steiner passed away on October 1, 2022. Bob started working at Touro in 1992 and retired in 2015. He served as the chair of the Computer Science Department for NYSCAS, as Site Director at the Touro Flushing campus, and as Associate Professor of Computer Science. He was one of the pioneers of the Computer Science Department and made a significant contribution to the development of a new degree in Network Administration.
Bob’s father served as a spy for the allies during World War II. He was eventually captured and sent to a camp in Poland. After the war, Bob met his wife in a displaced persons camp. They were sponsored by a US senator and were able to immigrate to the United States. They settled in New York where young Bob attended school. He received his bachelor’s degree at St. John’s University, his master’s at Stony Brook University, and served in the United States Air Force. Bob was an avid swimmer and a member of his high school and college swim teams.

Bob met his future wife Peggy at St. John’s University and they married at the university chapel. Shortly after marriage they moved to Brooklyn, where they lived for over 30 years before moving to Riverhead, Long Island to care for Bob’s father. They enjoyed a marriage of 48 years until Bob’s death. Bob and Peggy loved to travel, and they were able to visit Bob’s birthplace in Germany. In 2019 they moved to Myrtle Beach so that he could enjoy his other love—golf.
Bob loved everything about working for Touro, especially the comradery with the other teachers and the joy of helping students to find their career and life paths.
In honor of Bob Steiner’s contribution to the Touro community, we are creating a scholarship in his name to help a student in need. This scholarship will help keep alive the memory of Professor Steiner while honoring his commitment to the education of future leaders and innovators. The scholarship will be awarded to one Graduate School of Technology student each academic year who needs financial assistance.
