I’ve written before about the emotional toll therapy bots can take due to the unnatural intimacy of simulated empathy and fake connection.

Today, I want to mention a different largely invisible dimension: the psychological burden carried by the people who make these systems possible.

Behind every AI companion bot is a workforce tasked with labeling and filtering sensitive, sometimes disturbing content for training the AI models. These usually low income workers face mental health risks without much support. It’s a stark reminder that ethical AI isn’t just about algorithms; it’s about human dignity.

If we care about responsible innovation, we must care for the well-being of those who train our machines. Transparency and mental health safeguards should be non-negotiable.
