Learn more about the four new technology MS programs at Touro University GST and how earning a master's degree can help career changers and experienced tech workers land rewarding jobs in cybersecurity, web development, and more.
At Touro University Graduate School of Technology, our mission is to educate tomorrow’s
technology leaders today, and we’re committed to putting our students in the best possible
position to succeed. That’s why we’re excited to announce the launch of the following four
Master of Science degree programs, designed to provide graduates with the most up-to-date
knowledge and help them develop the cutting-edge skills they need to build rewarding careers in
tech:
- Cybersecurity and Network Administration (MS)
- Web and Application Development (MS
- Technology Leadership/Project Management (MS)
- Business Intelligence & Database Systems (MS)
“These four new degrees are the key areas of focus for students right now in 2023,” explains Touro University Graduate School of Technology Dean Issac Herskowitz. “Having a master’s in a specific area of technology makes a gigantic difference on a resume, so this is a real win for the students.”
Program chairs Dr. Shmuel Fink and Professor Payam Bina both teach courses for these new degrees and share that excitement over the value they add for students. “There’s a much richer offering of degrees,” says Dr. Fink, and Professor Bina agrees. “Now, students can choose what they want, and our curricula align with the industry right now, not what was happening five or 10 years ago.” He adds that earning potential for these degrees is high, with salaries over six figures after just a few years.
In fact, a master’s degree equates to an 18% increase in salary on average, and completing an advanced degree in technology is a great way to open doors for your career. Web developer, IT manager, information security analyst, and software developer all made US News and World Report’s “Best Jobs of 2023” list, and many tech jobs are expected to grow at a rate of as much as 35% over the next 10 years.
These new master’s programs at Touro GST allow students to specialize in an area of interest, but there’s also some flexibility since all four degrees share core requirements. “When you attend a school that has many different degree options, you can move amongst the degrees without losing too much of the coursework you’ve already completed,” puts forth Dr. Fink. Professor Bina points out that it also gives a student the freedom to take a course in a different degree as an elective. “It’s a great way to get your feet wet and learn about a different area.”
Completing one of these master’s programs can fast track your tech career as well, as Dean Herskowitz mentions. “If you want to scale up to management, these degrees are very good in helping to advance your career from a junior level job in tech.” Candidates with master’s degrees position themselves as more skilled and more knowledgeable than their counterparts, making it easier to climb the career ladder.
Students who are trying to break into technology careers can also benefit from these degrees. “We invite students from all backgrounds,” stresses Dr. Fink, and Dean Herskowitz echoes that. “We are very career-changer friendly. If you have a degree in psychology but want to shift to tech, we offer foundational courses most students can complete in one semester to bring you up to speed so you can earn your master’s degree.”
All four programs can be taken online or in-person, with evening classes so that students can earn their degrees without having to give up their current jobs. No matter which way you choose to attend, courses are small enough in size that you’ll have plenty of opportunity to build relationships with faculty. “We work with students in a more personal way,” says Professor Bina. “There are very close relationships between staff and students, which really helps to improve student performance.”
Whether you’re hoping to break into tech or looking to take the next step and move forward in your tech career, keep reading to learn more about each of the new Master of Science degrees in technology now available at Touro University GST and how they can help you find an in-demand, high paying job in the tech industry.
MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CYBERSECURITY AND NETWORK ADMINISTRATION
The field of cybersecurity is expected to grow by 35% in the next 10 years, and earning your Master of Science in Cybersecurity and Network Administration will give you an immediate advantage both in securing entry level jobs and in advancing your career. This STEM-Certified program will guide you through the rapidly evolving world of network security and give you the foundational knowledge of the tools and techniques you’ll need to be successful.
While many schools offer advanced degrees in cybersecurity, Touro University has created a combined program that also teaches students the fundamentals of network administration, making it easier for students to break into the field and secure entry level jobs. As Dr. Fink asserts, “Companies rarely hire someone straight out of school for cybersecurity jobs – even if they have a master’s degree. What makes Touro GST’s program unique is that it includes Network Administration, so a graduate can start out in an IT support role, get some experience, and then make a move into cybersecurity.”
According to Professor Bina there are also other aspects that makes the Touro GST’s MS in Cybersecurity and Network Administration unique: “We have more of a hands-on program, so students don’t just learn theory, they learn what to do on a case-by-case basis.” He notes that because Touro instructors work in the field at organizations like IBM, they’re able to share first-hand, real-world knowledge with their students.
Touro University is an Authorized Cisco Networking Academy and incorporates Cisco’s curriculum, which helps students prepare for CCNA and CCNP certifications. “We have a special relationship with Cisco,” Dean Herskowitz reveals. “With certifications, students can get entry level jobs as CCNAs and CCNPs and then can move up and advance. It’s just one more avenue that we offer to students to secure a job in their area of interest.”
After earning your MS in Cybersecurity and Network Administration, you’ll be prepared to take the exam to become Cisco-certified, where you can land a high-demand job like working as a CCNA that nets an annual salary of about $112,000. You’ll also be a highly qualified candidate for networking and security roles like:
- IT Manager: Work as one of US News and World Reports’ “Best Jobs” creating technology plans, overseeing computer systems, and ensuring network safety and security while earning a median of $159,000 a year for your efforts.
- Network Administrator: Earn around $81,000 annually managing the day-to-day operations – like performance optimization, repairs, and upgrades – of the network and computer systems at your organization.
- Cybersecurity Analyst:Help to keep your organization safe from cybersecurity attacks by anticipating threats, implementing proactive measures, and responding to security breaches for an average annual salary of $103,000.
MASTER OF SCIENCE IN WEB AND APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT
The Master of Science in Web and Application Development program at Touro University Graduate School of Technology gives student the skills to break into the software development field, preparing them to write code, create algorithms, and handle design and implementation for software, web sites, mobile apps, and other digital products.
“Web development is very popular – and it’s not always what we think of it as,” shares Dr. Fink. “There’s also the development needed for in-house applications, which often get designed as internal websites and run in a browser for internal use.” That could include everything from internal company sites – like intranets – to a software license that opens in a new browser when it’s installed. Web developers are needed to create it all, and this MS degree gives students the skills they need to do it.
This STEM-certified program will guide you through the ever-evolving world of technology, focusing on real-world applications with a combination of hands-on coursework and theoretical instruction. You’ll not only master a wide range of technologies and development methodologies, but you’ll also build proficiencies in the most current and cutting-edge programming languages and web development frameworks.
Once you’ve completed your master’s degree in Web and Application Development, you’ll be ready to work in this fast-paced and exciting field and can choose from a variety of roles, such as:
- Web Programmer: Take charge of planning and developing web sites by creating code and software algorithms to meet specific design requirements for a a median annual salary of $ 81,000.
- Front End Developer: Collaborate with designers to create the technical features of websites and other digital projects by writing code in languages like JavaScript and HTML, earning about $78,000 annually on average.
